IN 2021 two local groups – a women’s group called Sisters, and a men’s group called Emus – came into being to raise awareness around domestic and family violence in Coober Pedy, to make local DV services more accessible, and work towards eradicating this massive problem altogether. The groups work side by side and are made up of survivors as well as a range of others who are passionate about making Coober Pedy (and the world) a safer place for everyone. The groups aim to offer safe and supportive environments for people to learn and talk, as well as working on community events and initiatives.

The Sisters group formed out of the 2021 International Women’s Day event in town. The next Sisters event will be 2022 International Women’s Day, which will be celebrated in May.
